Rob Butterworth

Rob Butterworth is a Canadian independent filmmaker. He works primarily in 16mm film with an emphasis on the process as art. Ultimately diaristic, his work includes traditional screenings as well as installations that represent ideas of a self in continual development and informed by the process of collecting celluloid images, hand processing and hand manipulation. Most recently he is concentrated on a repetitive practice of chemically manipulating an image followed by reproduction through optical printing, and additional darkroom manipulation. This repetition has become ritualized and is seen as a form of mandala to aid in identifying and supporting the self within a larger system. His works have screened nationally and internationally including British Short Film Festival, Chicago Onion City Festival, Prince Edward Island Experimental Film Festival, Blinding Light Cinema and Cinematheque Ontario. His also a founding member and instructor at Film Farm – the Independent Imaging Retreat Collective.
