Cassandra Nicolaou

Toronto-based filmmaker Cassandra Nicolaou has been making films since 1995. Her award-winning short films have screened at hundreds of festivals and have been licensed for international broadcast and home video. In 2004 Nicolaou completed her feature Show Me. It enjoyed theatrical distribution in Canada and is available on DVD throughout North America and Europe. Nicolaou’s 2010 documentary Girls on Top is a behind-the-scenes look at an award-winning production of Caryl Churchill’s “Top Girls”. The film continues Nicolaou’s explorations of female identity, power, intimacy and sexuality. Her films often portray women struggling to define themselves within a larger context – be it familial or cultural or societal – and typically delve into the intricacies of relationships between women – as mothers and daughters, friends, lovers or artistic collaborators.
