Robert Rayher

“Tracing his roots to three significant influences (Brakhage, Snow and Cage), Robert Rayher has developed a style which is both sensual and minimalist, rigorous and aleatory, abstract and concrete.” – Bruce Jenkins, Media Study/Buffalo An independent moving-image maker, Robert Rayher works in sound, words, video and still photography in addition to making films. He has been making films since 1977 and has presented them across North America and Europe. Rayher’s primary concern is perception: he is interested in how and why we percieve the way we do. Every perception is orchestrated by a vast organization of physiological and psychic impulses. Rayher’s fundamental tactic is to make the viewer aware of the choices he/she is making – what to look at, what to believe, what to savour or ignore. Following the poetic tradition through Ezra Pound and Stan Brakhage, he is interested in imagestically presenting the processes of the mind (organism) in the art-experience.
