Peter Rowe

Director, producer, writer and narrator of Popcorn with Maple Syrup: Film in Canada from Eh to Zed, Peter Rowe is a a filmmaking veteran who has been participating in the Canadian film scene since the 1960s. As a director he has helmed the family movies Treasure Island and The Best Bad Thing, the thriller Take Two, the comedy Personal Exemptions, and the lost-at-sea drama Lost!, which he also wrote and produced. TV movies include Takeover and Horse Latitudes. His documentaries include Joshua Slocum: Canada’s Columbus, Samuel Cunard: Bridging the Atlantic and Song of the Sea Otter. His most recent film, the comic short Right Hook:A Tall Tail, won awards at the 2004 Sydney and Dawson City Film Festivals and has played in drive-ins across Ontario. His TV series credits as director include Fast Track, Pit Pony, The New Addams Family, Lassie, Black Harbour, My Life as a Dog, African Skies, Heart of Courage, Ready or Not, E.N.G., Katts and Dog, and The Black Stallion. Actors Rowe has worked with include Jack Palance, Ken Welsh, Patrick Bergin, Helen Shaver, Mickey Rooney, Sarah Botsford, Kevin Zegers, Catherine Bach and Keith Carradine. Rowe has taught film at the Harris Institute for the Arts and at Sheridan College’s Post-Graduate film program. He was Chair of the Directors Guild of Canada, Ontario from 2000-2002. The recipient of many awards for his films, Rowe has won honours at the Worldfest Film Festival (Treasure Island); the Houston Film Festival (Joshua Slocum); and the Montreal Children’s Film Festival (The Best Bad Thing) as well as an Etrog (Genie) Award for Best New Director for his first feature, The Neon Palace. Peter Rowe lives in Mississauga, Ontario. His filmmaking company is Peter Rowe Productions.
