This Is Moving: Illustration on Screen introduces a selection of artists working in contemporary Canadian animation. Over the past century, Canadians have made significant contributions to the animated arts, from the pioneering work of Raoul Barre to the major innovations made in the animation studios of the NFB. Today, Canadian animators contribute their talent and vision to productions by the largest animation studios in the world.
Outside of the mainstream, Canada is home to a large community of independent animators, collectives, studios and animation societies producing work recognized on an international level. However, at home in Canada, this work exists primarily in online communities and often finds itself relegated to the fringes of film festivals and artist-run events.
The depth of material explored by the artists represented in this exhibition presents animation as a sophisticated mode of storytelling, visual expression, and communication. This is Moving.
