End Rolls #2

‘End Rolls #2’ is a digital scan from the 16mm colour negative film ‘End Rolls’ (2009), originally a three-projector 16mm film and sound performance. Inspired by the colour fluctuations that appear at the beginnings and ends of developed film rolls, the work was made by exposing colour negative film directly to light sources such as candles, stove flames, and room lights by opening the camera body rather than using the lens. Positive prints were projected simultaneously on three unsynchronised projectors, causing shifting colour rhythms across the screens. Sound was also generated directly from the images using light-sensitive diodes attached to the projector lenses. As the images are not in synch between projectors, neither are the sounds. In ‘End Rolls #2’, this process is adapted digitally. The widescreen frame is divided into shifting compositions where colour sequences move in and out of sync, while sound is captured directly from the monitor in stereo. The visual and audio experience in ‘End Rolls #2’ is like a mischievous play within the widescreen playground.
