Stephen X. Arthur
Stephen Arthur started making surreal animated films at age 14 and continued to make them while studying biology at university. He then turned to experimental live-action films, followed by graduate studies in film production at USC in Los Angeles. This led to a ten-year period of authoring commercial feature-lengh screenplays while making a living as a technical writer. Finally, after a third detour as a neuroscientist, he returned to his early roots as a self-taught experimental animator.
Stephen Arthur is working on two major commissions in Vancouver, Canada: A Canada Council Creative Development Grant in Media Arts for five different film experiments, and pre-production with the National Film Board of Canada for an innovative use of 3D CGI landscape-modeling software to animate an unprecedented visualization of the distant past: the rapidly transforming landscape of North America over 500 million years, as though it were a real time-lapse film spanning millions of years of geological time in seconds ( working title: Timelapse Canada, 20 minutes).
