David Jones

David Jones lives in Los Angeles. He studied photography and video at Tyler School of Art and while at Tyler fell under the spell of punk rock and became a musician. He moved around the country playing in bands until settling in L.A. in the late 90’s. He has released numerous records, most notably in 2006 with Kelly Marie Martin, “The Twilight Auguries” which was reviewed in the LA Weekly, Performer Magazine and others. In 2007, he co-produced an ensemble cast folk opera, “Contraption Spell,” commissioned for the REDCAT theatre for the NOW Festival. He made the collaborative video and installation, “Faustus’s Children,” which was shown at Sister Gallery in Los Angeles, CCS Bard Hessel Museum in Hudson, NY, and the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 2009 at Basso in Berlin, Germany, he did a collaborative multimedia installation and performance with former bandmates from the seminal San Francisco band Fagbash chronicling their rise as a band amidst the queer rock movement of the 1990’s. Since 2008, he has been creating a series of animated short films distributed by the Canadian Film Board where he is currently represented. They have screened internationally at the Oberhausen Film festival, the Toronto Film Festival, MIX NYC, Outfest Los Angeles and others. Recent screenings for his new piece, “Beauty Must Suffer” have taken place at Yale University in January 2012 and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in February 2012. Upcoming shows include a Platinum Screening for Outfest at the REDCAT Theatre in July 2012 and the headline program at the Portland Experimental Film Festival in May 2012. His work has been reviewed in Artforum, Frieze, Art Review, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and X-tra magazine.
