  • Vacancy

Set in the once-utopia of Brasilia, “Vacancy” looks out at a world where personality is no longer possible.

  • Roadside Attraction

Pull over at the next exit and you’re gonna find sexy cowboys, donut eating, and black velvet paintings. The dreamy Super 8 landscape attests to how weird and alluring roadside America can be.

  • Stately Mansions Did Decree

This hand-painted, elaborately step-printed film begins with what appears to be torn fragments of thick parchment erupting upward, out of which emerges a series of landscapes, gardens, exteriors of mansions, castles and the like, then (as yellow predominates ever vegetable greens, sherwood greens and deep floral reds, blood reds) interior corridors and room, as if lit by chandeliers and candelabras – all of which eventually bursts into flames, explosions, which somewhat “echo” visually the beginning of film. • Vision Point

Visionary film. Experimental landscape animation: Moving time-lapse, telephoto cropping, and laborious re-registration create a surreal portrait of Western Canada. The “vision point” occurs when object and subject fuse, dissolving the distinction between the view and the viewer.

  • El Valley Centro

“In a media age dominated by rapid-fire imagery and pounding sound tracks, it is rejuvenating to encounter a film that invites the viewer to find rapture and meaning in the details of a single quiet frame. Veteran experimental filmmaker James Benning extends such an invitation as he turns his meditative gaze toward California’s Great Central Valley in his exceptionally beautiful film, ‘El Valley Centro.’ Employing natural sound and contemplative proscenium shots, Benning skillfully composes a series of pure and majestic images that at once evoke a sense of nostalgic splendor as well as deliver a subtle, yet penetrating, political commentary.…

  • Brick Wall

On one level the film simply records the process of bricklaying and thus it conjoins both sides of Winkler’s life – his artisanal work as a bricklayer and his artistic pursuit as a filmmaker. On another level, however, the film is a highly abstract work that transforms the structure of a brick wall into a virtual canvas.

  • Bridges-Go-Round

Manhattan becomes a maypole as its bridges execute a carefree but magical dance. There are two versions of the film on the reel, one with an electronic soundtrack by Louis and Bebe Barron, and one with music by Ted Macero and his group. The director feels that both should be seen, the electronic-sound version first because that sound vitally alters the responses of the viewer.

  • i was a strong man until i left home

A travelogue as catharsis, “i was a strong man until i left home” blends footage from several trips across North America, by plane, train and car. Informed by principles of Imagist Poetry, Kerr turns his camera on familiar imagery of the American travel experience, yet renders the quotidian as abstract, the continuity of perception as fragments. Employing a method he refers to as ‘Digital Sketching,’ “i was a strong man until i left home” possesses the intimacy of a flip through an artist’s sketchbook.

  • I Am Always Connected

“I Am Always Connected” is about inseparable connections, like those between light and shadow, the mind and the body, the rational and the instinctual. The film is a new construction from footage originally made for a 1984 installation piece for the Lumen Travo, a gallery in Amsterdam. The original Super 8 film was projected hundreds of times in a loop. “I Am Always Connected” was filmed on a small country road near Nijmegen, The Netherlands. I painted the canvas backdrop based on photographs taken at the location. I recently returned to the location and found that all the trees had…

  • Four Corners

“Four Corners” was shot in the U.S. in the Navajo Reservation. “Without using words or sensational imagery, this film makes a powerful statement in communicating the horror of environmental pollution” (Jury, 30th Tampere International Short Film Festival).
