  • Synaesthetic Anesthesia

    Synaesthetic Anaesthesia is the product of many long years, experimenting with optical printing, travelling mattes, high contrast manipulation and other film specific techniques and processes. The optical printer is used to manipulate archival imagery from the colonial era, forming a layered tapestry with contemporary images of landscapes, architecture and phenomena. By means of montage and optical recombination the film takes these historical fragments and builds them up to a frantic pitch. The film seeks to depict the frenetic digital information age but entirely through traditional photomechanical methods, a reversal of the norm.   • Satan

    Satan is sleeping with your next door neighbour. A film that examines the growing sense of something awful about to happen, and the helplessness of preventing it. Inspired by the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq. Satan was created as a collaboration between filmmaker Lisa Morse, and poet and writer Dan Walsh, through the Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op program, A Certain Openness: the filming of poetry.

  • The Alicorn

    The film takes the form of a three-tiered hallucination: a dream within a dream within a dream. A pharaoh time travels from the future to ancient Egypt and dreams of a medieval tavern where people are suffering from the Black Plague. In the tavern, on the brink of death, an old crone tells her life story. The woman’s story, narrated in old English song, alludes to her salvation by the appearance of an alicorn borne by her younger sister. Themes of women’s stories, power, and transgression are woven throughout the narrative.

    Kynth, a night creature, experiences emotional and cultural shock as she finds herself in love in the twentieth century. Suddenly she is awakened from centuries of deathful loneliness. Her new lover, a filmmaker, re-introduces her to the sights of the daytime world. She discovers too late, however, that this human she has come to rely upon knows as little about living as she, the undead. She finds out that even a vampire can cry.

    Elle-vis: A Woman…Impersonating a Man…Impersonating a Legend Collectively written, produced and directed by a trio of young Toronto filmmakers, “Elle-vis” is an irreverent and offbeat half-hour comedy about a renowned Elvis impersonator who is barred from performing by the all-powerful Elvis Impersonators Union after a lurid tabloid newspaper reveals the slanderous fact that he is… a woman.   • After the Circus

    An exploration into 19th century death mystiques, which rely heavily on the supernatural, along with a belief in, or at least a fascination with, fairy magic, much of it implied through subtle imagery. In all, it is a fascinating and astonishingly replete compendium of spiritual endeavor–the 19th century literary body of work that is, along with such masterful illustrators as Gustave Dore and others. These authors were passionately interested in what is noble and what is depraved, a far cry from present day ethics. Music by Messiaen.
