  • Blue Tide, Black Water

    Through macro-photography, “BLUE TIDE, BLACK WATER” explores the chemical reactions of different liquids to heat. Materials such as paint, India ink, honey and wax are observed boiling and flowering in extreme close up. The resulting microcosm seems a rich primordial soup.

    Two million tonnes of waste inhabit the landfill known as Smokey Mountain in Manila, Philippines. A squatter community of more than 30,000 people live in the slums around the landfill, and make their living by picking through the decomposing mountain of trash, looking for rare valuables. This is the setting for director Mateo Guez’s raw, ethereal first feature film. “Off World” follows a young Toronto man, Lucky, as he returns to Smokey Mountain for the first time since his adoption by Canadian parents when he was just a year old. Aided by NGO worker, Julia, Lucky tracks down his surviving…

  • Last Run

    A blind man’s journey along a winter trail is repeatedly intersected with the path of a running man. When the former takes notice, he is compelled to move towards the elusive figure. Time and time again, he tries to catch the man just out of his reach, each time a little faster and more determined than before. Whether or not he gets there, however, will depend on his frame of mind.
