  • Snailfingers

    On her immigration flight to Canada, Lailey, a young Iranian woman, encounters Snailfingers, an ancient aboriginal water-spirit. When Lailey and Snailfingers make contact, their stories become intertwined and unfold simultaneously. The drama chronicles a slice from the lives of Lailey and her sister Parvaneh, attending ESL school. Here Lailey meets Claire, the teacher’s assistant, a disillusioned lesbian of colour who represents the Sapphic voice. The secular lives of the three women are juxtaposed with Snailfingers’ spiritual existence. A poetic narrative presents glimpses of Snailfingers as she embarks on a healing quest. Several montages featuring water as the quintessential Yin element…

  • Contrafacta

    Contrafacta is a collage animation made by Toronto filmmakers Roberto Ariganello and Chris Gehman. Using images from medieval artworks, and quotations from the writings of medieval mystics and poets, Contrafacta creates a web of related images and events without a simple connective narrative. “This painstakingly crafted medievalist tale… conjure[s] a dreamland of floating royals and waltzing unicorns. Birth, death, plague and the farming of souls all rub shoulders in this episodic surrealist fable.   • Changing Evan

    Is my daughter Evan like a puzzle? Just when I think everything is going well, either a germ will attack or a new emotion will surface. I hear that children change every week. When I was making this film, my daughter was invaded by the chicken pox virus. I was convinced that I must finish this film as quickly as possible because her health was directly linked to its completion. Honourable mention by the Canadian Film Centre at the 2006 Ottawa International Animation Festival.

  • Discrete Moments

    A short experimental film, “Discrete Moments” offers some paradoxical thoughts on the mathematics of “forever and ever.” While a big jet plane crawls across the tarmac, a love held back, goes unnoticed. “Discrete Moments” was produced for the 1994 Cineworks omnibus film Breaking Up in 3 Minutes. Six Vancouver filmmakers were each given 200 feet of film, restricted to one day of shooting, three edits, one track of sound, and asked to make a three minute film about the break-up of a personal relationship.

  • Dike

    A woman recounts the humorous story of a friend’s attempts to hide an excessive perspiration problem, which parallels her sexual re-orientation. Her bodily fluids are coming out before she does. This is the story of one woman’s struggle with compulsory heterosexuality.
