  • Tracking Sasquatch (field report #1)

A search for the elusive Sasquatch. The first chapter in an ongoing series.

  • Goodbye

Incorporating meditations on male sexuality and personal exchanges, “Goodbye” travels through physical memory to reveal the marrow that grows beneath. Placed in a surreal yet pastoral surrounding, “Goodbye” is a letter explored through the journey of agarwood, or jin-koh, a rare oil created by a genus of tree infected with a fungal spore. The piece examines how an intangible object can impress greatly on personal history by relating perfume to memory. Experimenting with the abilities of the Bolex H16 and sound print film stock, this 16mm film was shot and hand-processed at Phil Hoffman’s Independent Imaging Retreat.

  • Wildblood

“Wildblood” is the third piece in a trilogy of animated shorts by Los Angeles artist David Jones. The film takes its inspiration from queer zines and the San Francisco homocore music scene of the early 90s. The artist was a member of the seminal band Fagbash and considers the piece reminiscent of the type of making indicative of this period. It is constructed entirely of xerox collages re-photographed and animated digitally.

  • JPT

Through the use of animated still images and utilizing the familiar tropes of music video, “JPT” is a portrait of a young man’s emerging sexuality and the range of emotions surrounding this experience. It is the first of several “live” animations by Los Angeles artist David Jones.

  • Phantoms

“A study of the incongruous and iconic suspended monorail in Wuppertal Germany. Shot on super 8 and finished on 35mm film, ‘Phantoms’ expertly employs the exaggerated grainy texture of the emulsion to suggest a netherworld out of time, both science fiction and ancient history, while an accompanying text muses on the vanity and folly suggested by the mysterious structure.” – Kate MacKay, Images Festival Text by Ryan Kamstra. Financial assistance provided by the Ontario Arts Council.

  • Towards a Vanishing Point

Footage shot in Coba, Mexico and the Siwa Oasis in Egypt and a found film from California serve as inspiration for a series of sketches on the notion of the vanishing point. Commissioned for LIFT’s 30th Anniversary Celebration.
