  • Bol 2 (the Rape)

    A boy waits for his mother to return home. “Bol 2 (the Rape)” is the second of three separate encounters that make up “Bol (Speak!),” a short dramatic experimental triptych on the nature of violence. Inspired by the Pakistani Marxist poet, Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poem “Bol”, and drawn from real events, this segment uses puppetry to comment on the increasing ubiquity and tenor of violence in South Asia. The extended triptych, “Bol (Speak!),” is also available for distribution through CFMDC.

    I made a microphone. I asked for a friend’s help to shoot. I asked for a friend to provide a condom. I asked for a film lab that would process the film for me. (the lab tends to ruin my films) I wrap the microphone in the condom, tell my friend to start shooting, and try to swallow what I’ve made.

Originally I’d been working on a larger project dealing with the exploration of subjective self through intimate relationships: my mother and two ex-girlfriends. My mother was willing to cooperate. We shot “experiments”, “tests”, and “games” throughout the fall, winter, and spring semesters. I screened the footage and it played well. The absent ex-girlfriend sections atrophied. Out they went!
