  • Flying to Nowhere

A flock of seagulls persist in the senseless attempt to move forward against heavy winds coming off the ocean.

  • CARBON SKY

During the in-between period of the 2017 record breaking forest fires and the 2018 record breaking forest fires, conditions were often ideal in the BC interior for filming at a fixed place with a fixed camera. I would often return to the exact same location time and time again. Sometimes five, ten, or twenty times over a period of days, weeks, and months. The locations that sustained my fascination were more or less located in a geographical triangle from Kamloops to the east, Cache Creek to the west, and Spences Bridge to the south. My main focus was on the…

  • FURNACE

For three years I researched and filmed various locations in the interior of British Columbia, Canada in more or less a geographical triangle from Kamloops to the east, Ashcroft to the west, and Spences Bridge to the south. My main focus has been the semi-deserts, deep valleys, and plateaus to define how I see the interactions of the natural and manufactured worlds, worlds brought into my perspective by the ever changing presence of shadow and light. Since I began filming this movie in 2016 there has been a yearly increase in the widespread smoke and haze from each new record…

  • CORNUCOPIA

The interior Plateau of British Columbia is a confluence of volcanism, plate tectonics, and glaciation punctuated by intermittent cycles of fire and droughts. The perennial constant in shaping the plateau is the influence of storms from the Pacific Ocean and the multiple mountain ranges (including the Rockies) that carry glacier silt and other minerals through the myriad of rivers and lakes. For 1000’s of years First Nations Peoples thrived in this region with civilizations and customs that remain a powerful guiding presence today. In 1858 gold rush fever gripped a region in North America that would later become part of…

  • Beaver Lake, August 25th, 2018, Ciel Variable

“Beaver Lake, August 25th, 2018, Ciel Variable” reimagines the length of a day in three screens, corresponding to Morning, Afternoon and Night, that are slowly revealed through zoom outs that travel from abstraction and slow motion to an ever-faster, ever-more-complicated panorama unveiling all the hours of a day.

  • Ambient Walk #3

In his series of site-specific installation works, Janzen navigates the back alleys of the city on foot with a video camera focused down on the walking surface. As surfaces rapidly pass by the lens, an unusual perspective of the city is captured. The visual result is highly animated with an endless variety of pattern, line, and colour. The rhythm of the artist’s footsteps and surrounding human and machine activity adds an ambient sound mix. Back alleys present an alternative for travel through the city, outside the traditional grid of streets and sidewalks. They offer a more private view of the…

  • HookLineSinker

Lead, rope, single-channel video projection, sound (5:00 loop), 2005-2014 An installation that challenges the viewer to negotiate between two and three-dimensional space. A rope from above penetrates a simulated “hole” in the projected image of water. An additional simulation of refraction leads the rope below the “surface” of the water to an oversized lead sinker toward the viewer’s space.

  • May Waves Rise From Its Floor

“May Waves Rise From Its Floor” follows in Hallé’s career-long practice of researching and building custom-made projection devices to be used in collaborative shows. For this project, Hallé continues his method of using live manipulation of candle light with broken pieces of glass and breathing to illuminate 16mm film. The ability to spontaneously create and adapt the visuals has led Hallé to perform this show with a diverse range of renowned improvising musicians. The 16mm film that plays on the projector was made by Hallé specifically to be projected using this custom-device. The subtle, slow-moving, and often abstract imagery of…

  • THREE BORDERS

“Three Borders” is a found-footage film reminiscent of Chris Marker’s “La Jetée” (1962). It consists of family photos of the artist and other anonymous found (family) photos. In the style of Magic Realism, the video narrates anecdotes from the families of Alisa Berger’s Jewish father and her North Korean mother. The ten stories narrate the meeting between Koreans and Jews from Galicia. They address the overcoming or the construction of inner, outer, national, ethnic, spiritual or emotional borders which span three generations.
